Maggie had only just put the phone down when Sue appeared.
‘Are you free at lunch today?’ She pressed her palms together in an attitude of pleading,
‘I need your help choosing some new shoes.’
‘But you have more shoes than Clarks,’ Maggie reminded her friend.
‘Yes, but there’s a reason…I’ll tell you later, twelve okay?’
‘Fine, but I’ll only have an hour and I need something to eat first.’
At ten past twelve, Maggie found herself sitting in McDonalds eating a cheeseburger with a hot apple pie to follow.
‘Why the need for more shoes?’ she asked Sue.
‘For Alan of course.’
‘What? We’re looking for shoes for Alan?’
‘No, silly, but all my shoes are sexy high heels, which, don’t get me wrong, I love, but I tower above him in them. I want some flatties but still sexy ones of course. Perhaps some of those cute little kitten heels as well, for special occasions.’
‘Talking of Alan, didn’t I see him in the surgery yesterday? I hardly recognized him, he’s changed his hair style hasn’t he?’
‘Yes you did, he just popped in to see me as he was passing, and yes again, he has changed his hairstyle. I persuaded him that the comb over look was a bit dated and shaved hair is very ‘in’ at the moment.’
‘So, if you can’t have George Clooney, you’ll settle for Bruce Willis eh? Things are going well between you I take it?’
Sue sighed, leaving her friend to draw her own conclusions, but not content with that, Maggie pushed a little harder,
‘It’s getting serious then? Do you think he’s Mr. Right?’
Maggie was taken completely by surprise when Sue’s eyes suddenly filled with tears.
‘Oh I’m sorry.’ She quickly apologised, ‘Am I being too nosey… I’ll mind my own business shall I?’
But her friend laughed,
‘No, I’m not crying because I’m sad, I’m happy; I think I might be in love.’
‘Wow, already, you’ve only known him a couple of weeks.’
‘It’s enough, Alan’s all I think about; he makes me laugh but he can be so romantic. I get that wobbly feeling in my stomach when I think about him; we really seem to fizz together.’
Maggie could only conclude that love was expensive as in the next half hour Sue bought four new pairs of shoes, basing her choices purely on the size of the heels, but she was delighted for her friend and hoped the relationship would work out for them both.
